A groundbreaking e-learning course dedicated to improving care and understanding of Sickle Cell Disorder (SCD) has been officially launched, marking a significant milestone in the fight against health inequalities. Created by The Red Cell Network, the course has been approved for national use by the National Haemoglobinopathy Panel and was commissioned by NHS England as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance healthcare equity.
This innovative educational program, authored by leading experts and patient advocates, aims to equip healthcare professionals with the essential knowledge, skills, and compassion required to provide optimal care for individuals living with SCD. The course includes six comprehensive modules:
Christopher Dean, a Clinical Nurse Specialist for haemoglobinopathies at UCLH, played a critical role as the principal author of the course. His expertise ensures that the content is both clinically robust and practically applicable. Stephanie George, a respected member of the SCD Patient and Public Voice Group, authored the module on the Sickle Cell Patient Experience, offering an invaluable perspective from those directly affected by the condition.
The course represents an opportunity for healthcare professionals to deepen their understanding of Sickle Cell Disorder, something that we know is lacking in the NHS workforce. Better knowledge will hopefully lead to patients receiving better, more empathetic care.
Healthcare professionals who complete the program will gain valuable Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points from the Royal College of Nursing, underscoring the course’s relevance and importance.
Sharing this resource among colleagues and friends will amplify its impact and drive meaningful improvements in SCD care.
