What is Prehabilitation?

It is an element of rehabilitation where your journey to recovery starts before your surgery/treatment has even begun through physical, nutritional, and psychological support.

Interventions are patient specific focusing on helping you to take control and be involved in your care. At UCLH, we are a fully remote service and therefore delivery will be via telephone or video calls.

Benefits of Prehabilitation

  • Reduces post-op complications & length of stay in hospital.
  • Personal empowerment - feel a sense of control and purpose, which prepares you for surgery and improves your quality of life.
  • Improved physical and emotional strength - an opportunity to improve physical function and emotional wellbeing, which offers resilience to the effects of surgery/treatment, enhances the quality of recovery, and helps you to live life as fully as you can.
  • Long-term health goals - an opportunity to reflect on the role of healthy lifestyle practices after a cancer diagnosis, to promote positive health behaviour change.
