Who are we and what do we do?
We are a therapies team comprising of Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists and Speech and Language Therapists.
We see people with neurological conditions who are referred by consultants at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. We offer a specialist out-patient service for assessment and advice on on-going management. Please be aware it is an open gym environment.
Physiotherapy
The Physiotherapists will assess your movement, mobility and balance. They aim to help you achieve the greatest level of activity using the best quality of movement possible.
Occupational Therapy
The Occupational Therapists will assess how any difficulties you have may affect every day living at home, work or leisure.
Speech and Language Therapy
The Speech and Language Therapists will assess any difficulties you have in either communicating or swallowing.
All our therapists will work with you to help you to achieve your maximum potential in these areas. If you would prefer to be referred to your local services please let us know and we will organise this for you.

- Find out about your current problems and needs.
- Undertake a detailed therapeutic assessment to understand the nature of your current problems and needs.
- Discuss with you the options for your therapy and treatment.
- Work out a treatment plan and goals and a time frame to work towards
- Referral on to your local service if this is more appropriate.
What can you expect from us?
- We will review the referral from your consultant and if this service is appropriate for you, you will receive an appointment by letter, phone or via the patient portal ‘MyCare’.
- We make it a policy not to cancel your appointment unless there are extreme circumstances such as staff sickness.
- We will continue to assess the effectiveness of your treatment plan and progress or make alterations to this as indicated. We will endeavour to ensure your needs are addressed as outlined in the initial referral to our service.
What to bring with you
- Any equipment you have been lent for practice between sessions.
- Any splints, walking aids exercise sheets or communication aids which you use.
- Glasses if you usually need them.
- If you are attending physiotherapy please bring loose comfortable clothing. (T-shirt/vest, shorts or leggings).
How can you help us and others who use our services?
- Please arrive promptly at your allocated time. When you get to the department please let our receptionists know that you are here.
- Please note, if you arrive more than 20 minutes late, your therapist will be unable to see you and you will need to rebook.
- If possible, let us know at least 48 hours in advance if you are unable to attend. A significant amount of time and money is lost in the NHS through people not attending or cancelling appointments without due notice. This increases our waiting list.
- If you are attending by hospital transport, please contact the department if you have not been picked up an hour before your appointment time.
