Post-travel screening

The Travel Clinic at HTD offers both NHS and private nurse-led consultations to people of all ages returning from tropical and sub-tropical areas of the world to check for infections.

This service is suitable for people who have returned from their travels more than three months ago and don’t have any symptoms but are worried that they may be at risk.

People commonly worry about schistosomiasis (bilharzia) after swimming in freshwater lakes. They may also want to check children for parasites if you have been living abroad for some months.

At the appointment, a nurse will ask you questions about your travels, specific activities and risks then do several blood, urine and stool tests. You will then receive a letter and report with the results of these tests, and be offered a telephone or face-to-face consultation with a doctor, as well as treatment if any of your tests come back as positive.

Tests offered:

  • Stool test to check for worms and parasites such as giardia. The sample can be mailed to the test centre

  • Blood test to look at your full blood count, which can help indicate if you have a parasitic infection

  • Blood tests for parasites such as schistosomiasis (bilharzia) and strongyloides

  • Blood tests to screen for blood-borne and sexually transmitted infections such as syphilis, HIV, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C

  • Urine test for chlamydia and gonorrhoea

If you have any symptoms such as a fever, rash or diarrhoea please use our walk-in service or RAID (rapid access infectious diseases).
