What is the Adult Allergy service?
This clinic specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of adult patients with allergic conditions.
About the team
Our team consists of doctors and a specialist nurse.
What are the aims of this service?
Depending on the severity and duration of the allergy condition, the service aims to:
- Provide a diagnosis. This will include the use of skin prick tests and blood tests
- Help you to manage your condition better
- Control symptoms
- Help improve your well-being and energy levels
- Hay fever caused by grass or tree pollen
- Bee or wasp venom allergy
- House dust mite allergy
- Animal allergies, such as cats and dogs
- Food allergy
- The service also specialises in the management of urticaria (hives) and angioedema (swelling of lips, eyelids), although this is not an allergic condition in most cases
- Learning self-management strategies
- Avoiding allergy triggers
- Dietary changes
- Medications such as asthma inhalers, nasal sprays, antihistamines, adrenaline injectors
- Immunotherapy (“desensitisation”). This treatment addresses the underlying reason for allergy rather than symptom control alone. It involves a three-year course of treatment with small doses of allergy-causing substances (such as pollens, bee and wasp venom, house dust mite) for conditions such as severe hay fever, house dust mite, bee or wasp sting allergy. These are available as subcutaneous (under the skin) injections for venom and pollen allergy, and as sublingual (under the tongue) tablets for house dust mite allergy and some cases of pollen allergy where injections are not suitable.
- Omalizumab (a “biological” drug given by injection for management of chronic urticaria)

This clinic does not undertake patch testing for eczema or contact dermatitis. This service is not currently available at UCLH.
This clinic does not provide medication (drug) allergy diagnosis and treatment. This is provided by the UCLH Specialist Drug Allergy service, based at the Royal National ENT hospital.

What happens after my initial appointment?
If you are accepted for therapy, you will be contacted by one of our administrators to schedule either your group or individual therapy sessions.
Because we receive a large number of referrals, it is possible that you may have to wait before your therapy starts.
What if I cannot attend my initial appointment?
If you are unable to attend your appointment, please let us know at least 48 hours beforehand so that we can reschedule and offer your appointment to someone else. If you do not attend your appointment without telling us, we may refer you back to your GP.

The RLHIM is also a teaching hospital and from time to time other healthcare professionals may observe in outpatient clinics as part of a training course. We will always ask your permission for students to sit in during your consultation. You do not have to have students present if you would prefer not to.
