- They are referred for further assessment following results from their Newborn Hearing Screening (NHSP)
- They are referred to a Paediatric Audiovestibular Medicine (AVM) or Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) consultant for investigation of their hearing or balance
- They are being seen in our hearing aid department, for hearing aid fitting, follow up or repair of their hearing aids or they require new earmoulds
- They are undergoing platinum-based chemotherapy or antibiotic treatments at UCLH and require regular monitoring of their hearing
- They require a post or pre-operative hearing assessment whilst under an ENT surgical care pathway
- They are being seen by the community ENT service and require an age-appropriate hearing assessment
How can my child get referred to paediatric audiology?
Your child must be under the care of a paediatric AVM or ENT consultant at UCLH to be seen by UCLH paediatric audiology services.
If your child requires hearing aids, their consultant may refer them to paediatric audiology to consider a hearing aid trial. Please note, the paediatric audiology department only accepts hearing aid referrals for children and young people who have a GP within North Central London.
Your child may be referred to paediatric audiology for further testing following the results of their newborn hearing screening.
Before attending your child’s appointment, remember:
If your child wears hearing aids, please ensure the hearing aids are brought to all appointments.
We can arrange interpreters for all languages, including British Sign Language (BSL).
Where possible, we recommend attending appointments with the patient only, as our testing rooms are controlled environments. If siblings are also brought along, they must stay in the waiting area during the hearing assessment and be accompanied by an adult.
Please ensure to leave enough time when attending appointments, as often many different assessments are completed during your child’s appointment time. If you fail to arrive within the first 15 minutes, your child may not be seen.
If your child requires a quieter waiting environment, please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate their needs. If you need somewhere private to feed your baby, please speak to a member of staff who will direct you to our dedicated feeding room.
We are supported by a team of play specialists, who aim to create a safe, welcoming and less frightening environment for children and young people at UCLH. They are available for extra support during appointments if required.
Should your child’s school require proof of their appointment, please email our admin team (uclh.

Please be aware that we are a teaching department and would appreciate your co-operation in supporting students in their training. Please let us know if you are uncomfortable with a student being present and we will try to accommodate accordingly.
