The hepato-pancreato-billary (HPB) cancer service is for people who have cancer of the liver, pancreas, gall bladder or bile duct. Our team combines research and clinical care to provide the best and most innovative treatments for HPB cancers. At UCLH, the following services are available to you:
- Viral hepatology outpatient clinics for conditions like hepatitis
- Medical hepato-pancreato-biliary service for cancer and non-cancer conditions of the liver, bile duct and pancreas
- Clinical nurse specialist led clinic
Most of the other HPB services are provided at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust (The Royal Free). It is now one of the largest centres in Europe for treating both cancer and non-cancer HPB conditions. The Royal Free is the main hospital for surgery for HPB conditions in the North London and Mount Vernon cancer networks. It is also the hub for urgent care for HPB conditions.
If you are under the care of the Royal Free but need to be admitted to UCLH for an issue with your HPB condition, your healthcare team from the Royal Free will still stay in contact with you.
Liver, pancreatic, gall bladder and bile duct cancer, and metastatic colorectal cancer (cancer that has spread from the colon or rectum).
If you are diagnosed with a HPB cancer, a HPB cancer clinical nurse specialist (CNS) and a cancer support worker (CSW) will support you. They work closely with your HPB cancer doctors. They are your main contact if you or your family have questions about your diagnosis, wellbeing or treatments. You can contact them in between your clinic appointments. They can:
- give you information about your diagnosis and treatment.
- offer you advice and support to help you to live with a HPB cancer, including help with your physical, emotional, social, and financial needs.
- direct you to other places where you can get support.
Your CNS may also complete a Holistic Needs Assessment (HNA) with you to understand your needs better. During the HNA, you can share important information to help with your treatment and care. You don't have to do an HNA, although it can help to address concerns you might not have mentioned before. If you think an HNA would be useful, please talk to your CNS.
HPB CNS and CSW working hours: 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday

If you have an urgent but not life-threatening problem, you should call NHS 111 before attending the hospital. You will then be directed to the most suitable location for your care (Accident and Emergency (A&E) is not always the best option).
If your problem is life-threatening, you should call 999 and go straight to your nearest A&E.

Tertiary referrals
Patients are directly referred to the UCLH HPB cancer service from the North London and Mount Vernon network. Patients are also referred from specialist tertiary and quaternary services from other UK regions for specialised opinions.
All cases are reviewed at the joint North London and Mount Vernon Network HPB Cancer MDM, an online, three-part meeting. Each week, over 70 patients are discussed at this meeting. All potential cancer patients are then seen by a consultant surgeon within a week to discuss their treatment options.
