Professional background
Steve Pereira studied science and medicine at University of New South Wales, Sydney, with postgraduate training in gastroenterology and hepatology mainly at Guy’s and King’s College hospitals, London and advanced endoscopy training in Paris, Amsterdam and Indianapolis. He has been a consultant at University College Hospital since 2000 and at Royal Free Hospital since 2008, and is also a professor of hepatology and gastroenterology at University College London.
His clinical and research interests centre on the causes, early diagnosis and treatment of liver and pancreatic cancer, as well as benign biliary and pancreatic diseases. These conditions represent a significant number of patients referred for specialist opinion to UCLH, and the activity of the research group is linked closely with the clinical hepatopancreaticobiliary service at UCLH and the Royal Free. He is past chairman of the British Society of Gastroenterology Pancreatic Section and President of the Pancreatic Society of GB&I, and current Endoscopy lead on the HPB Board of London Cancer. He also serves on the research committees of the British Society of Gastroenterology and Guts UK.
