Professional background
David trained in medicine, anaesthesia and critical care in Wessex, Oxford, London and Toronto. On completion of a period of research at UCL he was appointed consultant at UCLH and latterly a professor within the division of surgery UCL. He now divides his time between university and clinical activities.
He is director of the UCL masters programme in perioperative medicine and supervises a number of MD PhD students within the division.
Clinically, he leads the busy post-anaesthetic care unit at University College Hospital where he set up and runs the largest UK advanced training programme in perioperative medicine. David plays an active part in medical education and is education lead for the International Board of Preoperative Medicine and an associate editor for a number of medical journals.
