Professional background

Dr Krueger holds the post of consultant in neurosurgery at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. She is specialised in functional neurosurgery including Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS), radiofrequency ablation (RFA), and MR guided Focused Ultrasound (FUS).

Graduating in Medicine from the University of Freiburg, Germany in 2011, Dr Krueger received “summa cum laude” for her MD thesis. She finished neurosurgical residency in the Department of Neurosurgery, Freiburg in 2018 before pursuing a one-year fellowship in stereotactic and functional neurosurgery at Vancouver General Hospital, University of British Columbia, Canada with Professor Christopher Honey. She was later awarded the “Venia Legendi” (PhD equivalent) from the University of Freiburg.

Dr Krueger was head of the stereotactic and functional neurosurgery service at the Kantonsspital St Gallen, Switzerland before joining the UCL functional neurosurgery unit at the National Hospital in late 2022. Her arrival introduced a new surgical workflow that allowed the team to double the number of DBS procedures, reducing NHS waiting times. Her clinical practice includes:

  • DBS and RFA for movement disorders (Essential tremor, Parkinson disease, and dystonia)
  • DBS for cluster headache and other autonomic cephalalgias
  • DBS and RFA for refractory mental disorders (Tourette’s syndrome, obsessive compulsive disorder, and major depression)
  • RFA for the management of medically refractory pain (i.e. caused by terminal cancer and central pain)
  • FUS for Tremor
  • Emergency general neurosurgery including cranial and spinal procedures

Research interests

Her clinical research includes DBS for laryngeal dystonia and severe refractory forms of Tourette syndrome as well as FUS for obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression and refractory forms of pain. Current interests also include image-guided DBS programming and the use of wearables to improve patient outcomes.
