Professional background

Mr William Muirhead is a consultant neurosurgeon at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN). He uses microsurgical techniques to treat conditions affecting the brain and spine including meningioma, vestibular schwannoma, cavernoma, trigeminal neuralgia and degenerative spinal disease. He works alongside the ophthalmic surgeons at Moorfields eye hospital in the management tumours involving both the brain and orbit. He is part of the on call neurosurgical service at UCLH, which provides 24 hour emergency care for the brain and spine to the population of North London. He works on the design of trials involving brain computer interfaces and hopes to be able to make this treatment available to patients in the UK in the future.

Mr Muirhead undertook neurosurgery training in London at the Royal London Hospital, Imperial College Hospitals and Great Ormond Street with further subspecialty fellowships in both Skull Base and Neurovascular neurosurgery at UCLH. During his training he was able to gain a broad international experience working in departments in both Australia and the USA.

His research interests are in the application of new technologies to improve patient outcomes. Alongside his clinical practice he works with the Sensory Circuits and Neurotechnology laboratory at the Francis Crick Institute on novel neural interfaces and is Chief or Principal Investigator on several clinical trials.
