Professional background

Smita Rajshekhar graduated from Manipal University (India) and completed her specialist training in obstetrics and gynaecology in the East of England. Her training provided her with extensive experience in managing a broad range of women’s health conditions, including heavy periods, fibroids, ovarian cysts, and menopause and she started her consultant career at Addenbrooke's Hospital (Cambridge) in 2018. 

Currently, Smita is employed as a consultant urogynaecologist at University College London Hospitals (UCLH), where she specializes in treating women with pelvic organ prolapse and urinary incontinence.   

She is passionate about education and mentoring and has been actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching throughout her career. She has delivered an O&G teaching programme at the University of East Anglia (UEA) in Norwich, serves as an examiner for medical students at Cambridge University and is enthusiastic about supervising medical students conducting clinical research during their hospital placements. She is also dedicated to training future specialists in obstetrics and gynaecology, as well as subspecialists in urogynaecology. 

Her interest in surgical simulation training is reflected in her role as an invited faculty member for gynaecological cadaveric courses, OASI courses, and RCOG basic practical skills programme. She has authored and coauthored book chapters and journal articles, and her research interests focusing on the management of overactive bladder and the impact of complex surgery on patients’ quality of life. She was awarded an MD for her dissertation on short-term antibiotic prophylaxis in caesarean sections.   

She also holds several national roles, including positions on the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) Exam committees, the British Society of Urogynaecology (BSUG) Information Governance Committee and the BSUG Sustainability Special Interest Group. Her contributions reflect her commitment to advancing the field of urogynaecology and improving patient care.
