Professional background
Alice Murray studied medicine at the University of Oxford, receiving a Vaughan-Williams academic scholarship for her undergraduate examinations. She undertook a laboratory-based BSC in her final year and then went on to complete her clinical studies at UCL.
Miss Murray developed an interest in colorectal surgery very early in her career. She undertook all her general, emergency and colorectal surgical training in London and was ranked second out of all candidates in England at her higher surgical training interview.
She completed a PhD at Imperial College London under Sir Ara Darzi, looking at international comparisons of surgical quality and performance. Miss Murray spent two years as a Colorectal Research Fellow in New York at Columbia University where she won the surgical research prize. She was then awarded a Harkness Fellowship in Policy and Practice where she studied the engagement of surgeons in high value care (high quality care at the same or lower costs) in Boston Massachusetts, at Harvard School of Global Health. These experiences in America sparked an interest in the routine measurement of surgical outcomes for the purposes of quality improvement, as well as in clinician management and leadership.
On returning to London she completed her surgical training and went on to hold a post as Pelvic Floor Fellow at St Mark’s Hospital, followed by further sub-specialist training in complex proctology, inflammatory bowel disease and intestinal failure.
She currently holds a three-year post as an associate surgical specialty lead in colorectal surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons.
She remains committed to clinical research and medical education and has authored numerous peer reviewed publications and book chapters, as well as undertaken international presentations.
She enjoys working in hospitals abroad, having lived in Tanzania, Serbia, Australia and America.
