Professional background

Dr. Umair Chaudhary is working as a consultant neurologist at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN), Queen Square. Concurrently, he holds an Honorary Lecturer position at the UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology.

His academic journey began with undergraduate studies in Pakistan, culminating in an MBBS from King Edward Medical College, Lahore. Initial training in Medicine, Surgery, and Neurology at Mayo Hospital Lahore preceded his shift to academia, where he earned a master’s in clinical Neurology and a PhD in Epilepsy, EEG, and Neuroimaging from UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology.

While working as a Specialty Doctor in Stroke at Fairfield General Hospital he completed his MRCP. Dr. Chaudhary completed his specialist training in Neurology at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham. He holds a CCT in Neurology and pursued further expertise in scalp and intracranial EEG and presurgical evaluation through a Post CCT Fellowship in Complex Epilepsy at NHNN.

Dr. Chaudhary's clinical focus spans first seizure assessment, epilepsy, refractory focal epilepsy, presurgical epilepsy evaluation, seizure semiology, and EEG reporting. He manages dedicated Epilepsy and general Neurology clinics and conducts video-EEG telemetry reporting at NHNN.

Driven by a passion for improving healthcare practices, he participates in audits and quality improvement projects. His dedication has earned him accolades, including the Silver Medal and National Talent scholarships during his undergraduate studies, as well as the Early Career UCL Investigator Award in Neuroimaging Techniques in 2012.

Dr. Chaudhary's commitment to education is evident through his role in establishing a teaching program at the Stroke Unit, at Fairfield General Hospital. Currently, he actively teaches and supervises medical students, clinical and research fellows, registrars, and MSc and PhD students at UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology and NHNN.

Research interests

In the realm of research, Dr. Chaudhary explores focal epilepsy localization using multi-modal imaging, employing simultaneous scalp EEG or intracranial and functional MRI. His contributions include numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals, along with co-authoring a book chapter titled "EEG-fMRI in adults with focal epilepsy."

Serving on the editorial board of Frontiers in Neurology's Epilepsy section, he actively engages in peer reviews for international journals.
