Professional background

Coziana Ciurtin is professor of rheumatology at UCL and honorary consultant in adult and adolescent rheumatology at University College London (UCL). Her professional interests include research into pathogenesis of lupus, Sjögren's disease and inflammatory arthritis across the life span, interventional and observational studies in adolescent rheumatology to facilitate better management strategies and improved outcomes, and musculoskeletal ultrasonography. She is deputy director of the department of ageing, rheumatology and regenerative medicine and director of the FOCIS Centre of Excellence for Gender Diverse Research in immunology in adolescence at UCL, currently leading on lab research focused on investigating the role of puberty and sex determinants on immune responses, role of machine learning in personalised treatment approaches for lupus and Sjögren’s disease, and biomarker discoveries for optimised management of comorbidities in young people with rheumatic diseases. She is the adult rheumatology representative of the EULAR Paediatric Committee and coordinates the research pillars of the Paediatric Rheumatology European Society (PReS) Lupus Working Party and PReS Sjögren's Interest Group.

Coziana completed her clinical training in rheumatology in Bucharest, Romania. She holds an MSc in biophysics and cellular biotechnology and a PhD in rheumatology from the “Carol Davila” University of Medicine, Bucharest (the last in collaboration with University of Leeds, UK) and an MSc in rheumatology from the University of Oxford, UK. She subsequently trained in adolescent rheumatology and currently acts as the adolescent health representative of the RCPCH CSAC and vice chair of the Versus Arthritis Barbara Ansell National Network of Adolescent Rheumatology.
