Professional background
Dr Catherine Houlihan is a consultant in clinical virology and infectious diseases at UCLH. She has a special interest in neuro-virology, imported and unusual infections, nosocomial infections and novel diagnostics including metagenomics.
Catherine has a joint substantive appointment between UCLH and UKHSA where she is a consultant in infection at the Rare and Imported Pathogens Laboratory at Porton Down and is a member of the imported fever service consultant team (https://www.gov.uk/guidance/imported-fever-service-ifs). She also spends one day a week at Colindale where she is clinical virology lead for the national intrathecal antibody service.
Catherine has an infectious disease/virology clinic at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases and contributes to the National Encephalitis MDT which runs weekly from the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery.
Catherine is vice chair of the national clinical virology network and teaches at UCL and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. She is the Principal Investigator of a trial of influenza antivirals at UCLH.
