UCLH is pleased to announce two new Board appointments for 2025.
Dr Jonathan Broomberg, non-executive director
Jonathan joined the UCLH Board in January 2025 as a non-executive director. He is currently the CEO of Vitality Health International and global head of health insurance for the Discovery Group, bringing a wealth of experience in the commercial healthcare sector and global public health and policy. Jonathan studied medicine at the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa and read PPE at Balliol College as a Rhodes Scholar. He also has MSc and PhD degrees in health economics from the University of London.
Jonathan has had a long and varied career in healthcare, including a period serving as special advisor to the Minister of Health of South Africa in the first post-apartheid administration and a founding director of a healthcare private equity and venture capital firm. He also served for five years on the first technical review panel of the Global Fund against AIDS, TB and malaria.
Jonathan is a member of the commercial and private healthcare strategy committee and research and innovation committee.
Arif Ahmed, associate non-executive director
Arif Ahmed is an entrepreneur and private equity investor in healthcare, technology, e-commerce and B2B services companies. He has a proven track record of scaling innovation in complex regulatory environments.
Arif holds a BA in economics, a MSc in health policy and management and has undertaken postgraduate studies in systems theory. He spent the early part of his career in the IT industry where he co-founded a software company that scaled an NHS proof of concept pilot into a Department of Health contract serving over 1 million NHS employees. Prior to this Arif was a management consultant at several independent consultancies operating largely in the fields of IT, strategy, healthcare and e-commerce. He is now building a portfolio of healthcare, software and B2B services investments.
Arif is a member of the commercial and private healthcare strategy committee, finance, investment, and performance committee and the research and innovation committee.
The appointments were approved by the UCLH Council of Governors at its meeting of 22 October 2024. Baroness Julia Neuberger, UCLH Chair, said: "We are delighted to welcome Jonathan and Arif to the Board and look forward to using their breadth of expertise and wealth of experience to further improve the services the trust provides to its patients, and to bring a new dimension to the Board in light of its need to focus on its future sustainability. UCLH has a clear vision and set of values that make it a desirable place to work and the clinical expertise we are able to provide is second to none. Both Jonathan and Arif have values that align to those of the Trust, and I have no doubt that they will make a hugely positive contribution to our journey."
