My first ten years of work were spent at drama school and as an actor in theatre, television, radio and film, and included eight rock musicals! At the age of 30, I read Sociology and Psychology at Brunel University and graduated winning the Faculty Prize. I then researched various aspects of health and social issues for universities, charities and health authorities/trusts and I have been a co-editor and contributing author to a number of publications. I was a parent governor at my children’s county primary school and was Chair of governors for three years steering the school through the implementation of Local Management of Schools and the introduction of the National Curriculum. I also co-founded and was the first Chair of an educational charity set up to benefit the children and I chaired education appeals for the London Borough of Brent. In health, I was the Lay Member and Deputy Chair of South Brent Primary Care Group Board, sitting on Independent Funding Request panels for treatment outside service level agreements for nine years. I was a member of the NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) UK wide advisory committee on QOF (Quality Outcomes Framework) for the six years of its life. Alongside my research work, in my forties, I started to sing opera professionally and did this for over twenty years. Finally, I set up a business working on communication skills and interview preparation for senior people in the NHS, charities and universities.
