Christine Felce: Activist Alphabet
The Street Gallery, Ground floor, University College Hospital, 235 Euston Road NW1 2BU
Friday 5th July – Wednesday 11th September
UCLH Arts & Heritage is excited to present Activist Alphabet by artist Christine Felce. The creation of the Activist Alphabet began with the artist's desire to do what she could to help and learn more about the causes of climate change. The first letters were inspired by protest banners, such as 'Stop Funding the Oil Industry' and ’Capitalism is Causing Climate Change.’ As the Alphabet has grown, the artist has read more and reassessed the series.
"It's become obvious to me that climate change is about a crisis of human relationships: relationships with each other and our relationship with nature."
There is a physical hand-drawn thread of what the artist imagines as mycelium that flows through the series, connecting all 26 letterpress prints. Christine was inspired by research into how fungi make connections between plants, providing food and water and reciprocally sharing information. Her thoughts were that if we are to come through the climate crisis, we will need to take our lead from nature and find solutions that help us work together.
Christine Felce, MA, studied at the University of Cardiff and the Royal College of Art. Her work has been exhibited in the cloisters of Gloucester Cathedral, the Ruskin Mill Gallery, The Printmakers Gallery, and Havana, Cuba.
The collagraph prints on display are available for purchase; for enquiries, please email rachel.wilford1@nhs.net
