UCLH is pleased to present the first strategic workforce plan for University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH). Providing top quality care to all our patients is at the core of everything we do, and our diverse workforce is key to delivery.

The overall trust strategy sets out its vision as a research organisation, developing its specialist services, using innovation and technology. We need to be retaining our current workforce by developing them to work in an agile way to thrive in an ever-changing environment. This includes acknowledging where there may be gaps in the labour market and working on new ways of working to ensure that these skill gaps do not impact on our commitment to patients to deliver the best care.

Part of this work is to maintain our position as the employer of choice in the NHS and it is with pride that the trust can highlight that the 2023 NHS Staff Survey results has ranked UCLH as the number 1 in England and within London for staff recommending this trust as a place to work.

This is the second consecutive year running UCLH has achieved this position.

Amongst the Shelford Trusts, UCLH shows continuing improvement, out of the 7 People promises and 2 themes, UCLH ranks top across 6 of these, with Staff Engagement being the highest score. However, we are not complacent and must continue to improve our offer to our staff to maintain this position and continue to strive for improvement.

Recognising this, having a vision of what the trust needs in its workforce of tomorrow to support future service delivery and improving patient care is paramount to inform our workforce-related decisions now.

To deliver this objective, this plan highlights the actions that the trust is committing to and will focus on supporting:

  • its current workforce to be agile in a changing working environment- both in terms of their skills from a technology perspective and diversifying of practice- and approach to the way services are delivered.
  • to be the employer of choice for future workforce in its approach to development and being at the cutting edge of new services.

  • This plan will complement and support the forthcoming Workforce and Organisational Development strategy which is due for publication later in 2024.
